spazioSERRA is a non-place where the art of young artists manifests itself as a bump in the road. It is physically located inside the Lancetti railway station in Milan, but it does not have its own address and does not seem to belong to any geographical map. One of the objectives of the exhibition space is to move this feature to another reality, the virtual one. Given the current health emergency, SERRA anticipates what would have been an exhibition device for next season, launching its first digital exhibition How much of an * are you? by Aurora Bertoli. The artist, graduated in Painting at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts in Milan and graduating in Visual Arts at the IUAV in Venice, develops her first solo exhibition on spazioSERRA website.

Aurora Bertoli’s artistic methodology analyzes the various virtual forms of collection and cataloging of images which, from social media to cyber space in general, populate an apparently unlimited place.

Her research focuses on the relationship between the world of images and the digital one, for this reason How much of an * are you? was designed entirely by the artist as a virtual exhibition. It aims to provide an archive of images starting from the concept of machine learning and evaluating the possibilities of interaction with the viewers. Machine learning is an artificial intelligence device capable of collecting computer data and reworking it to create new content. The artist forces her algorithms to understand how they can affect the creation of an image and an imaginary: the works start from the physiognomic studies of the nineteenth-century physician Cesare Lombroso and arrive at the development of new identities through digital systems and alphabets.

From the suburban site to the website, the exhibition shifts its physicality, but not its concept, focused on the Horror Vacui, the topic selected for this exhibition season that is coming to an end. In fact, for the design of her exhibition, Aurora Bertoli thinks of the internet space as a place so saturated with images that the user can develop nomophobia, or the fear of remaining disconnected, with the consequent loss of identity and social recognition. The exhibition tends to display a typical feature of art history that concerns the alteration of personal identity. The works are video animations visible from June 4th 2020 on www.spazioserra.org/how-much-of-an-are-you. The exhibition will be inaugurated on the same day at 16.00 via a live broadcast on the Instagram profile of spazioSERRA.
